Summer - Ali Smith

Títol:
Summer
Autora: Ali Smith
Llengua original: anglès
Editorial: Penguin Books
Any: 2020

"The briefest and slipperiest of the seasons, the one that won't be held to account - because summer won't be held at all, except in bits, fragments, moments, flashes of memory of so-called or imagined perfect summers, summers that never existed."

"Funny [...] like, how we overload summer most out of all the seasons, I mean with our expectations of it.

Nah, Summers can take it. That's why they're called summers."

"It's truly terrible. But this new generation of responsible young people will sort it out, his mother says. Thank God for the young people. I trust them.

Yeah, that's it. Give us the responsibility for everything you've all messed up but don't give us any power with which to change anything, his sister says."

"At which point the two kids, who’d been fiercely arguing about everything, both fell about laughing at the joke with a pleasure, an infectious delight, the kind that made everyone in that restaurant turn towards their table, not in a way that meant they wished they'd be quieter or were finding something intrusive, but in that way where something warm happening will unite a room of strangers."

"Sometimes he hears the hooves of the horses on the roads of the cities he grew up in on the road outside this window.
That's not horses, they tell him here in his neighbour's house. That's people from the Airbnb studio along the road. It's the wheels of their suitcases going over the cracks in the pavement."

"...the people left behind after someone has died are liable to become inhabitants of Grief Island and must be sure to carry an inflatable life jacket with them to help them swim away if the weather roughens and they haven’t got access to a boat."

"He now knows a pure and inarguable thing about the infrastructure of everything. When two particles are entangled then a change to one no matter where the other particle is in the universe will mean there's a change in the other.
But how do the particles know? How do they know whether entanglement has or hasn't taken place?"

"She is a person on a pavement in a city in a country on a planet, seen from above by so many satellites that aren't there so we can see how fine and beautiful our planet is from space but so the people who control the satellites can zoom in on people for all sorts of reasons that are nothing to do with what almost everybody and everything on the planet actually needs."

1 Us deixo un fragment del primer capítol.

Everybody said: so?

As in so what? As in shoulder shrug, or what do you expect me to do about it? or I so don’t really give a fuck, or actually I approve of it, it’s fine by me.

Okay, not everybody said it. I’m speaking colloquially, like in that phrase everybody’s doing it. What I mean is, it was a clear marker, just then, of that particular time; a kind of litmus, this dismissive note. It got fashionable around then to act like you didn’t care. It got fashionable, too, to insist the people who did care, or said they cared, were either hopeless losers or were just showing off.”
