Fa uns dies vaig acabar de llegir The first phone call from heaven de Mitch Albom. Mitch Albom és un dels meus escriptors preferits i aquesta vegada vaig decidir llegir-lo en versió original (és a dir, en anglès).

Com sempre, Albom tracta temes com l'amor, la mort o el dol, i ho fa a través d'una història amable i senzilla: un dia els habitants d'un poble petit comencen a rebre trucades de persones que estimaven i que els van deixar. Albom aprofita els diferents personatges que reben trucades per narrar diferents maneres de (con)viure amb la mort i la soledat.

Entre les històries dels habitants del poble,  coneixem la d'en Sully, que no creu que les trucades vinguin del més enllà i que intenta descobrir la veritat per protegir el seu fill, que voreja els cinc anys i que creu que tard o d'hora rebrà una trucada de la seva mare.

Paral·lelament, Albom també narra la història de la invenció del telèfon de Alexander Graham Bell a través d'una història d'amor amb Mabel Hubbard.

"No one is certain who invented the telephone. Although the U.S. patent belongs to the Scottish-born Alexander Graham Bell, many believe he stole it away from an American inventor named Elisha Grey. Others maintain that an Italian named Manzetti or a Frenchman named Bourseul or a German named Reis or another Italian named Meucci deserves credit.

What few dispute is that all these men, working in the mid-nineteenth century, explored the idea of transmitting vocal vibrations from one place to another. But the very first telephonic conversation, between Bell and Thomas Watson, standing in separate rooms, contained these words: “Come here. I want to see you.”

In the uncountable human phone conversations since then, that concept has never been far from our lips. “Come here. I want to see you”. Impatient lovers. Long-distance friends. Grand-parents talking to grandchildren. The telephone voice is but a seduction, a bread crumb to an appetite. “Come here. I want to see you”"

No podem oblidar que es tracta d'una novel·la de Mitch Albom i que, per tant, té un to trist, però també esperançador; a més de venir carregada de moral.

Així com Els dimarts amb Morrie o Les cinc persones que trobaràs al cel no són llibres per a tots els públics (perquè són massa reals o massa durs), The first phone call from heaven sí que ho és. Sí, és cert que a vegades té un to trist i a vegades hi ha massa màgia i fe. Però també ho és que està escrit de tal manera que et pots sentir perfectament involucrat en la causa d'en Sully. No deixa de ser una faula,  i les faules són per a petits i grans,  creients i no creients.

Sigui perquè el lector creu en el miracle o sigui perquè precisament vol confirmar que és una farsa, la història t'atrapa i et captiva fins al final.
